Well… what a difference a week makes. Last week at this time, most of the La Crosse area was sweltering under temperatures in the 90s and high humidity. Summer had finally blasted into the Coulee Region… or did it? This week, temperatures plummeted into the lower to middle 60s for afternoon highs, along with cloud cover thick enough to make Seattle look like the sunshine capital of the country.
So, how did La Crosse fair during June 2009? No surprises here, we were cooler and drier than average. The mean temperature was 67.8°. This was 1.8° below normal. This was actually close to June 2008, where the mean temperature was 68.4°. These numbers are probably a bit skewed because of last week’s 90 degree temperatures. Had they not occurred, the June numbers would have actually turned out even cooler.
As far as precipitation is concerned, we only saw about 2.85″ of rain in La Crosse during June. This is about 1.15″ below normal. June 2008 was a completely different story. We saw 7.00″ of rain! That’s 3.00″ above our normal June rainfall. Of course, areas to our south saw even more rain, along with severe flooding.
I wish I could say July is getting off to a good start, but our high yesterday of 66° actually tied for 2nd place for the coldest temperature on that date!
Don’t worry yet. There is still a lot of summer left, along with plenty of time for the hot and muggies to return. In fact, some of the computer models are hinting at another warm up at the end of next week. Stay tuned!
Talk to you all later!
Cory
